That “single” was then released to the public and if the “single” was successful, the artist would make their money back and return to the studio to record another “single”. This went until the advent of the LP (Long Playing Record). Once the LP was accepted, an artist needed a record company and had to incur huge time, expense, and risk to produce a full LP. After this considerable investnment, the LP would then be released to the public. Big costs, big risk. The viscious cycle continued even through the rise and fall of the cassette and the compact disc.
