How To Create A Gated Synth In ProTools

Creating a pulsating synth line is made easy with gates! Start by recording a synthesizer melody composed of long whole notes – chords or single notes work fine. Then choose which track the synth should pulsate along with – in most cases it’s the kick/bass drum. Now, simply add a send from your kick drum to “bus 15″ and turn the send level to unity gain – 0db. Now create a gate as an insert on your synthesizer track and adjust the synth gates Key Chain Input as “bus 15″ and enable the “side-chain input.”  Now the gate is responding to the signal sent from the kick/bass drum and will open the gate only when it receives a signal from the kick drum. Adjust the gate times “hold,” “release,” “attack” and “range” etcetera for style and there you have it! A simple yet stylistic synth line all your own! Debbie Deb would be jealous…
