Quick Trick Using McDSP’s Compressor Bank 3 Plug-In
The pre-filter section of the McDSP compressor is fantastic!

A trick I like to use to brighten vocal recordings is to use the pre-filter section of the CB3 compressor to accentuate the sweet spot of the vocal. To start, enable the pre-filter mod in the CB3 plug-in, select the “inline” button and activate the parametric band-pass button (the bell curve one at the bottom). Now give a gain-boost of 3db-6db with a very wide Q (~.2-.7). Now comb through frequencies until you hear the sweet-spot of the vocal being lifted. Usually the spot-setting is around 3.6Khz. Readjust the gain and fine tune the frequency to balance in the mix.
To go even a step farther, using the McDSP post-compressor eq, you can further remove sibilance or muddiness by selecting the frequency you want to boost or de-emphasize and adjust the gain and Q to taste.
Honestly, if you have a solid miking, the McDSP Compressor bank 3, CB3, is all you need to really polish up a vocal. Moreover, this technique can be used with virtually any instrument to bring out the color you want while de-emphasizing frequencies outside of the determined range. Experiment and create success!
