Add Some Umph To Your Synths!
Here’s a quick and easy way to add depth and power to your synthesizer recording.
Start by duplicating your synthesizer track and detuning the oscillator. Using the key of your song as your guide, detune the synth oscillator to taste and color the EQ in a frequency different from that of your original synth. Sometimes I will add more bass with a broad Q and a couple sharper peaks in a middle/higher frequency with a narrow Q. Other times I will use a bandpass filter to find a mid-rangy sweet spot for the synth to sit in; it all depends on what’s already going on in the track. After I find a nice range to place the detuned (or up-tuned) synth, I might throw on a chorus effect with a subtle flanger and maybe some distortion, little or a lot of reverb and… Voila! The synth recording sounds better already.
Still not satisfied? Experiment with delays and phasers and comb filters, oh my!
