Time Management in Band Tracking

Time management in band tracking is essential in getting your moneys worth at any recording studio. One of the easiest ways to get ahead of the game is to have your drummer arrive early to set up their kit – before your time-slot if possible – before the rest of the band. The reasoning seems fairly obvious but it is often overlooked. The drummer has the most equipment setup and the most attention in mic setup for the engineer, so if the drummer arrives early to set up in the tracking room while the other band members arrive and get situated, the engineer can start miking the kit while the drummer fine tunes and shares ideas with the engineer. This awareness can save upwards of an hour of time and eliminates some of the pressure to get things done quickly. Moreover, it allows more time to be spent conceptualizing the desired drum sound and style. Stay ahead of the curve and it will certainly pay off in the end.
