T-Pain Vocal FX
T-Pain Vocal FX are available at CCM Studios! I have been getting a lot of requests from my hip-hop clients to do the “T-Pain” vocal effect for them and here is all it takes.
The T-Pain or Cher vocal effect works by taking the vocal signal and pitch-shifting it very quickly to the perfect pitch. Since no one can sing in perfect pitch, there will always be some amount of correction - this sound is familiarly known as the “T-Pain effect”… Here’s how to do it yourself.
First you will need an auto-tune plug-in to operate as an RTAS - Real Time Audio Suite. This means that the plug-in will be placed as an insert effect and will work in real-time, while the song is in playback. At CCM Studios we feature the Antares auto-tune software.
After inserting the auto-tune effect on your track, next, select the key of your song in the auto-tune menu so that the plug-in understands what notes you are working with throughout the song. If the key you chose is not right, the note-corrections of the auto-tune will sound noticeably wrong within the song.
Now set the auto-tune correction speed as fast as it can go. This setting controls how quickly the auto-tune effect will be implemented on your audio signal and can be tailored more later.
Now that your song key is selected and the auto-tune is set to a fast correction speed, start singing away and voila, you’ve been “T-Pained”! Surprised by how good it sounds? Yea, you don’t have to be able to sing well at all to use this effect and be a singer for a day… just ask Lil Weezy.
Finally, if you are satisfied with the sound you’ve got and wanna “put it to tape”, so to speak, you can record the signal with the effect by changing the track’s output and recording it into a new mono track, or a stereo track if you are using stereo effects and routing it from a vocal bus. You now no longer need the RTAS plug-in track, but I’d save it just in case you wanna tweak something later - for the meantime, just disable the FX not being used to save DSP.
Need any extra help? Give us a ring at CCM Studios and we can guide you through the process, or we can do it for you while running through our world-class mics and pre-amps.
