Put Your Pride Aside, Inside the Booth
Forget about looking cool while you’re recording and think about sounding cool. The most important element in any audio recording is the finished product. So when it comes to recording, forget about what you look like or how the people in the control room are perceiving you. Many times, the odd vocals with weird facial expressions is exactly what the track needs because doing it normal sounded dull. I tell clients, think about exemplifying the mood of the song instead of just singing or rapping. Get behind the words and express the emotion first and the words will fall in line.
Think of how guitarists choose their guitar type, strings, guitar settings, amp, amp settings, etc. to find the “right” sound for the track. Or the drummer who tunes and re-tunes his set to perfection. In the same way, a vocalist must use their own voice as a dynamic and ever changing instrument to adapt to the track. Sure they are all playing or saying simliar notes, patterns or words, but it is the character and expression that shows through and makes a lasting impression.
If it feels odd, it means it’s working.
