Mixing in Headphones
Mixing in headphones can be very tricky, so it might be a good idea to start the session by saving your headphone mix as a separate version. My main suggestions would be to realize that the sounds are much closer to you, and most have an initial loss of spatial awareness. For this reason, I would recommend alternating between headphones and regular monitors as much as possible to double-check your work and how sounds are translating between playbacks. It is also important to appreciate the frequency characteristics of your headphones and how they are affecting the actual flat-level sound of the mix. Lastly, I would run through many trial and errors of bouncing and listening to the mixes in various systems to see how things sound. Trust your ears, but if you have the money, trust an accomplished engineer. They can do wonders…
