BROKEN TONGUES finishing LP at CCM Studios!
BROKEN TONGUES is finishing their debut LP at CCM Studios!
Denver’s own, Broken Tongues, is an amalgam of jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock and soul crammed into one vibrant sound. As co-producer and mixing engineer of this album, tentatively titled Play It Low Key, or, Learning a New Language, I am eager to release this gem to a public craving melodic layering and lyrics with substance riding over crafty beats and swimming percussion. Having moved from Chapel Hill, N.C., in late 2007, Broken Tongues doesn’t have much of a Denver fan-base yet, but the new album is sure to turn a lot of heads, especially in the wake of the recent success of Denver locals, The Flobots.
Broken Tongues‘ first single, to be released in July, titled, Does Hip-Hop Remember the Jazz?, is a throwback track to the emergence of modern hip-hop in the early 90s with references to Digable Planets and Guru’s classic album, Jazzmatazz, as well as to the use of samplings from Wes Montgomery and Fred Wesley. Now 2008, these roots seem to be almost forgotten in the fog of club-bumpin’ singles and ring-tone raps. As deliberate as the title, the song begs the question, does modern hip-pop appreciate the roots of its own existence? Does Hip-Hop Remember the Jazz?
