Here’s a handy tip I occationaly utilize at CCM Studioswhen tracking. When working with vocals, it’s not always necessary to layer takes in the recording process. Sometimes using a simple process of “copy and shift” can do wonders at mimicking the illusion of layered vocal takes.

Accomplishing this affect in Pro-Tools is fairly simple. After recording a successful take (on the chorus for example) duplicate the track and nudge said region to the right or left a few milliseconds or so. This process can be repeated but please use caution and taste to preserve the organic feel of your recording. The goal is to create the offset that actually sounds natural and imperfect. Thus mimicking the layered perception of multiple recordings. -2G, CCM Recording Studios Denver
