Denver-based hip-hop group, Devious Thugs, were in last night recording the first track on their upcoming CD. The track, Devious World, has a sinister and mellow, yet at times aggressive feel that the three emcees slay in their own unique ways. For tracking, we used our Neumann U87 mic into our Oram Sonics pre-amp, along with a little positive EQing in the mid and mid-high ranges. I don’t use much EQ going in, but I like to add a little spice to brighten certain characteristics in the performers voice to fit the track. Forget the idea of, “fix it in the mix,” think more like, “fix it in the tracking”!… Just don’t get carried away on a recorded effect. Subtle and tasteful is the key here.
And speaking of taste, here is a sample of the group on a previous track, “Different Time, Different Pages” – It is also the group’s first video. Stay tuned for the new album and come through to CCM Studios sometime to schedule your own session.
