Denver MC, Q-Burse, dropped bombs at CCM Studios last night in preparation for his upcoming mix-tape, The Realest Miqx Tape. Soon to be mixed by DJ Big Spade, this mix-tape is sure to turn some heads with Q-Burse the Timeless Child doin’ damage! Q-Burse knocked out 18 tracks in like 3 hours! Some of them short, yes, but this, my friends, is a lesson in lyrical preparation before recording. Have your material clean and pressed in various ways, in various places, and presented to various people, hundreds of times. Read the last part again, maybe, because it is the brass-tax truth. But what did you expect, Qburse has 29 CDs under his belt and tracks with the likes of KRS-1 and Dilated Peoples, along with over a decade of experience in the field. Here’s how it works
For getting a lot of vocals done in a day -or just a few hours- have the rooted foundation and a confident idea of what you want and practice this constantly. Now think of some refining elements and vocal styles that can be played with while recording and don’t cram all of your words together in one take; break it up and come in and out with your multiple vocal tracks. Imagine the ways you can use the multiple vocal tracks to form a complimentary and transitive relationship in the aural space. Plan on the feel of your vocals within the song and try various back-up vox to add flavor and/or support to your main vox track(s).
The point being, you have to feel it, and most need to be prepared to really feel it when listening back and scrutinizing their work. It sucks to be disappointed after the fact, so prepare yourself to get it right the first time. If things don’t feel right, take a break, slap your face and think of all of the people that will soon hear your amazing song. Or just do what Q-Burse did and come prepared to knock out every track in three takes or less. If all else fails, remember that it’s your dollar at waste. (wah, wah, wahhhhhhhh) Practice, practice, practice… And then practice some more. Then come through to CCM Studios to get it done right.
